COVID - 19 SCAM WARNING
The U.S. Secret Service’s Global Investigative Operations Center released an alert warning of the increase in COVID-19 stimulus scams. These fraudsters pose as U.S Treasury officials and contact potential victims through texts or emails directing them to a website to register to receive a stimulus check. The websites are designed to collect victims’ personally identifiable information, bank account information, email addresses, passwords and more.
The Secret Service expects these and similar frauds to increase over the next several weeks. Maintain increased vigilance when providing information through a website. The agency reminds the public that official stimulus/relief information regarding COVID-19 will never be sent via text message or on any other messaging platforms. Consumers seeking information about the stimulus/relief program should contact the specific government agency only through its website for guidance. Do not click on links in text messages or emails.
OTHER WARNINGS AND TIPS:
-
Don't respond to texts, emails or call about checks from the government. Information regarding your payment status can be found at the IRS's Economic Impact Payments Information Page.
-
Ignore online offers for vaccinations and home test kits. There are no proven treatments or approved home tests available at this time.
-
Hangup on robocalls. Scammers are using illegal robocalls to pitch everything from low-priced health insurance to work-at-home schemes.
-
Only use official sites to get the latest information on COVID-19.
